Investment and Securities Markets (BS0098)

This option is designed as a general introduction to investment and securities markets, especially equity and bond markets. It includes: an introduction to global stock markets; the principles of investment; valuation of equities and bonds; practical aspects of fund management; alternative investments; performance measurement and risk analysis; the process of issuing shares and eurobonds; and an introduction to academic research on financial markets. The intention is to offer information and analysis that is applicable to capital markets anywhere rather than to provide a detailed description of any particular market. The course is primarily from the point of view of investors and the analysts who serve them, rather than from a company perspective.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should have an understanding of: the operations of a stock market;principles of portfolio theory; bond analysis;bond portfolio management; the capital asset pricing model;arbitrage pricing theory; the valuation of shares;the efficient markets hypothesis; behavioural finance; the asset allocation process; global portfolio management; methods of measuring the performance of managed funds;risk analysis;

Assessment Information

There is one assignment which counts for 30% of the mark and a final exam which counts for 70%.
