Employment Relations: The UK and Beyond (BS0171)

The course examines employment relationships between (and among) employees and employers, and considers a number of contemporary, controversial issues. It is designed to develop understanding of the chief parties to British employment relations - management, unions, the State and the European Union. The impact of globalisation on employment relations is also considered. The state of flux of employment relations, and the impact of international policies and factors, are themes that run through the course.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- Appreciate some of the key employment relations issues that Britain is experiencing and is likely to experience.
-Evaluate critically the strengths and weaknesses of the various approaches towards regulating employer-employee relations.
-Evaluate critically the strengths and weaknesses of various Government policies.
-Develop a practical understanding of the weight of European and global influences on British employment relations.

Assessment Information

'Take-home' open book exam, to be completed within 48 hours by 20th December (exact date to be announced at the start of the course).
