Managing Reward and Performance (BS0172)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : MSE-P-BS0172 In a context of intensifying competition, rapid change, and decline in traditional collectivist approaches to regulating pay and employment conditions, the effective management of human resources has become viewed as the chief means of securing competitive advantage in many organisations. Reward strategy and related approaches towards enhancing performance and employee commitment have therefore emerged as key line management concerns that are increasingly integrated into overall strategic agendas, rather than handled externally by personnel specialists and outside agencies such as trade unions. This course reviews some fundamental changes that have occurred in remuneration policies and practices, and offers guidance on managing employee performance in other key areas. The treatment goes beyond the descriptive or prescriptive, with the legitimacy of current developments subjected to critical scrutiny. Entry Requirements? On completion of the course, students should be able to
-understand the key determinants of changes in remuneration practices over the past two decades in the UK; -understand the rationale embraced in the term 'Reward Management' or 'New Pay'; -discuss critically the efficacy of current managerial strategies in the areas of pay and performance; -appreciate the importance of appropriate policies in areas outwith the field of remuneration as means of enhancing performance. Assessment will be on the basis of a two-hour examination. There is no continuous assessment for this course. The examination paper will contain 6 questions, from which a free choice of 3 questions will be selected. The examination mark will constitute 100% of the final course mark.
