Acronym : INF-1-HC1 This course gives an introduction to the methods employed in understanding the cognitive factors affecting human communication. A set of communication phenomena will be analysed using a variety of methods (e.g. participant observation, psychological experiments, computational simulation, grammatical description and logical analysis). -An introductory understanding of some examples of communication phenomena presented from contrasting disciplinary perspectives.
-An appreciation of the neccessity of formal theories for modelling communication. -Skills of operating formal systems for describing communication. -An appreciation of the weaknesses of formal theories for modelling communication. -An appreciation of the relation between models and experimental data in this area. -Improved skills of interpreting and producing scientific argumentation, especially as it crosses disciplinary boundaries.
