Introductory Econometrics (EC0077)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : MSE-3-IE The main aim of the course is to develop students' understanding of how economic relationships can be tested empirically. By considering examples of how such economic models have been dealt with empirically in several areas of economics, the course will provide a basis for students' appreciation and understanding of the use of such techniques in their Honours Options. It will also enable students to carry out their own modelling and estimation, as part of the course and beyond, developing skills frequently expected of contemporary economics graduates in a wide variety of contexts. To this end, exercise sheets and computer laboratory usage are integrated with the lecture material, and play a very important part in the learning process. The course culminates in an assessed project, in which, given a range of topics and appropriate databases, students are required to undertake their own modelling, estimation, evaluation and reporting. Topics to be covered are likely to include: regression analysis; testing economic hypotheses; functional form, a prioris and interpretation; multiple regression, estimation and inference; estimation problems; specification errors, multicollinearity, error term problems, identification; dynamic models, lagged dependent variables; time series analysis, stationary processes and unit roots, vector autoregressions and cointegration; dummy variables; limited dependent variable models; probit, logit and tobit.
