Research Methods (ED0342)

This module is designed to provide course members with the knowledge and skills necessary for undertaking a dissertation/extended study at postgraduate level. It will offer an overview of the concepts and techniques which underpin research and provide students with an opportunity to practice certain research skills in conducting a small-scale investigation. Required in many pathways to complete the PG Diploma. Cannot be taken with Research and Enquiry Methods in Outdoor Education/TESOL. Early enrolment is advised for this module, since demand for it is high and places are limited.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module course members should be able to:
-identify research questions
-locate and evaluate critically the relevant literature
-evaluate a range of data collection instruments with reference to issues such as the reliability and validity of the data, feasibility of use, and ethical considerations
-interpret data and comment on the conclusions supported
-undertake a small-scale research project in an area of professional or personal interest
-present a research report on the small-scale research undertaken in LO5.

Assessment Information

The assessment for the module on Research Methods will be between 4000 and 5000 words in length. It will consist of the report of a piece of small-scale research which you have planned and undertaken. Its structure should reflect the planning process which forms an integral part of the module.
