American Literature 1 (EL0145)

i) An introduction to the study of literature, the issues of literary criticism, and the problems of reading, including texts in American and other literatures from a variety of literary periods and genres; ii) A study of the English Renaissance from Shakespeare to Milton and of Early American literature.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The courses will work towards giving you:

- an understanding of the historical development of literature within national cultural contexts (specifically, the comparative evolution of American, English and Scottish literatures)
- a grasp of the development of theoretical approaches to literature and criticism
- an understanding of the ways in which literature can be explored through associated disciplines such as history, philosophy, and the literatures of other languages.

Assessment Information

4 essays (up to 2000 words); 1 class exam. Class work 40%; class exam 30%; degree exam 30%.
