Organology of Wind, Stringed and Percussion Instruments (P00309)

This course will provide an introduction to historical and contemporary issues in the organology of non-keyboard instruments, using the resources of the Edinburgh University Collection of Historical Instruments (EUCHMI). Aspects studied will include the design, manufacture, playing techniques, social background and repertoire of different instruments. The organological literature, iconographic sources and historic musical instruments will be studied and evaluated.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will have become familiar with the design, manufacture, playing techniques of, and repertore appropriate to, a variety of wind, stringed and percussion instruments. They will have been introduced to a selection of instruments in the EUCHMI collection and will have gained an understanding of their design and historical importance.

Assessment Information

Three-hour examination and one piece of coursework.
