From City State to Empire in the Near East (P00339)

This course provides a broad introduction to the development of state societies in the 3rd millennium BC as well as their restructuring during the 2nd millennium through into the explosive development of the Assyrian empire in the early first millennium BC. Emphasis is placed upon the regional development of these societies, as well as the development of the political economy and aspects of material culture.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Theoretical Understanding of:
- the processes that led towards the development of urbanism in the Near East, and theoretical approaches to the problem.
In addition this will provide a foundation for an understanding of other classes that analyse state development.
Practical and Professional Skills in:
- analysing various theoretical approaches to a subject and critically evaluating them.
Transferable Skills including:
the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and their interpretation.

Coursework equivalent to a 4000-word essay
