A introduction to the language, literature and culture of medieval Scandinavia, with an emphasis on Iceland. A study in particular of saga and edda, and an examination of the critical approaches that have been taken in this field since c. 1880.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

A reading ability of Old Norse; familiarity with the literature and culture c. 1000-1300; an understanding of critical and theoretical approaches pertaining to the period; communicative, presentational and writing skills.

Assessment Information

One essay of 4,000 words.
