Paediatric Factors in Sport (P00528)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : EDU-P-P00528 The child and exercise is a controversial and complex topic. It can be seen as a two-phase continuum where, on the one hand, children are hindered in their natural self-expression by an increasingly urbanised environment and by an increasingly sedentary way of life. These factors conspire against children and deprive them of their biogenetic legacy. Physical education and sport strives to reduce or eliminate such problems. On the other hand, there is increasing awareness and concern about the possible harmful effects on children who participate at a progressively younger age and with ever-increasing intensity in sports competitions designed by and for adults. Thus, exposure to sport and sporting situations is occurring at much earlier ages than in the past. This means, for example, that children are using strength and conditioning programmes to a greater extent and at earlier ages. This module will consider the physical, physiological and psychosocial developmental aspects of humans and how sports conditioning may affect those developmental aspects. The module will address not only performance aspects, for example of strength training programmes, but will also consider the possibility of injury or damage from early training. Learning outcomes will be achieved by methods including lectures, demonstrations, workshops and directed reading.
