New Waves in European Cinema (P00677)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : LLC-P-P00677 This course will trace the emergence of new waves in European cinema since the late 1950s including the Free Cinema in Britain, the French Nouvelle Vague, the New German Cinema and the Dogme movement in Denmark. It will explore the cinematic developments in the context of other media developments, in partcular the advance of television, and discuss the significance of the European new waves in its relationship to mainstream Hollywood cinema. The course will also have to respond to the question: to what extent do the new waves strengthen the notion of national cinemas or contribute to the development of a European cinema culture. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Familiarity with the variety of advanced developments in European cinema since the late 1950s; awareness of its aesthetic, cultural and media-political contexts; ability to reflect on cinema in interdisciplinary contexts; appreciation of a diversity of approaches to the subject and the variety of interpretations achieved; improvement of communication and written presentation skills; ability of developing research questions and completing independent research work.
