Agroforestry (P00683)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : GEO-P-RMAGF

The course is focused on the biophysical and socio-economic interactions of agriculture and forestry on a particular land unit rather than the wider implications of social forestry. Existing agroforestry systems are discussed in their socio-economic context, with reference to associated problems of land management. The ecology of agroforestry systems is then examined in relation to atmospheric and soil processes, the manipulation of crop mixtures and the interactive role of livestock. Finally, diagnosis and design, economics and management aspects are considered for a specific case study from an agroforestry development project, chosen where possible to link in with participants' experience. Students most likely to be interested in this module are those with experience in rural development work in the developing countries, or those intending to work in this area.
