Silvicultural Systems (P00738)

The subject matter of silviculture consists of the various ways in which stands of trees can be manipulated so as to enhance their growth and productivity and to maintain the integrity of the forest as a whole. The purpose of this course is to consider the ways in which forests function and the ways in which they can be treated so as to guide their growth for our purposes.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- The understanding of the ecology of the species being dealt with and a recognition of the constraints of management and exploitation.
- The examination of stand structure and dynamics, the soils and climate within the forest and regeneration and recruitment.
- The application of silvicultural systems as well as the silviculture of forest plantations.
