Introduction to Research Methods and Ethics (P00934)

The course will introduce and explore some of the key quantitative and qualitative tools for conducting research in the Public Health area. In addition, it will introduce students to the epistemological foundations of research in the field of Public Health and will look at the ethical requirements for undertaking public health research. The areas to be considered will include empiricist, positivist and social constructionist philosophies of science, issues of ethics and governance, basic concepts in statistics, qualitative research methodology and the critical appraisal of existing research literature.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should develop an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of different quantitative and qualitative methods, the links between them and how they can be employed to undertake research in Public Health.
