European Avant-Garde in Literature, Art and Film (P01074)

This course is designed to explore the emergence of new art forms and working methods in painting, literature and film in the European Avant-Garde movements since 1910. It will investigate innovative artistic techniques in painting like collage, montage and assemblage, discuss the emergence of new styles of writing in poetry, examine various forms of avant-garde cinema and pursue changes in the relationship between the various arts under the impact of the new technical media photography and film. Study will be based on a variety of materials including manifestos, literary works, critical writings, paintings and films, and will relate to various art mvoements, such as Cubism, Futurism, Vorticism, Expressionism, Dadaism, Constructivism and Surrealism. The course will conclude with a reading of theories of the Avant-garde critically assessed on the basis of the seminar's explorations.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Familiarity with a range of advanced developments in European art, literature and film of the 1910s ad 1920s; awareness of the aesthetic, cultural and media-related contexts; ability to reflect on aesthetic concepts across a variety of art forms and artistic techniques; knowledge of major theoretical approaches to the subject and learning how to contribute to a body of questions and completing independent research in an interdisciplinary environment.
