This directed reading course aims to provide students with a critical overview of the main scholarly trends, methods and approaches pertaining to their field of interest in first millennium studies. It seeks to enable students to situate their own particular interests within the wider context of the field.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The course aims to guide students to an understanding of the history of scholarly activity within their field of interest, and so to isolate within that field areas requiring exploratory or revisionist research. It intends to provide students with a sufficient degree of historiographical awareness to assist them in maximising the significance of their Masters research.

Assessment Information

The course will be assessed through a 3500-word 'historiographical review' worth 100% of the final mark.
