Methodological Debates in Geography (P01518)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 11 ? Acronym : GEO-P-GGFG1B This course provides students with knowledge of advanced debates in physical and human geography, as well as related spatial and environmental sciences. The subject uses directed readings and seminar discussios to explore the place of theory and method in constructing distinctive geographical knowledges. The course also examines the relationship between academically-formed geographical knowledges and other frameworks of spatial and environmental knowledge, including the spheres of policy and the everyday. The subject is designed to be responsive to the specific research interests of students and requires reading in a specialist area relevant to the design of the proposed research. Entry Requirements? - knowledge of current intellectual debates in the field of geography and related spatial and environmental sciences.
- appreciation of the varied cultures and histories of geographical knowledge formation and their relevant to contemporary debates. -ability to synthesise and critically analyse a range of debates, in written and verbal form. - understanding of the relationship between theory and methodology. - ability to develop and report upon a research proposal, informed by reading in a specialist area. - preparation and presentation of a conference paper. Conference participation and presentation and a 2,000 word written assignment.
