Philosophy of Science 1 (PP9977)

An introduction to the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of the natural sciences. Topics to be studied may include: scepticism, perception, appearance and reality, theory and observation, the problem of induction, the nature of scientific progress, Bayesian confirmation theory. This course is appropriately combined with Logic 1h or History of Science 1h.

2 essays, 1 degree exam. Coursework: first essay counts for 40%; second essay counts for 60%; exemption at 60% or over. Final assessment without exemption: 50% degree exam; 50% coursework; must obtain at least 35% in degree exam.
