The Old North: Early British Society in Northern Britain (U00152)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-3-U00152 The course aims to explore the literary, historical and material evidence pertaining to the British-speaking peoples of early medieval northern Britain from the Roman period until the eighth century. Its particular emphasis is upon the processes by which these peoples came to be dominated by the English Bernicians, and the social and cultural ramifications of these processes for both peoples. Students will engage with key literary sources (in translation), learning the critical; apparatus required to begin evaluating their evidence, while learning also to appreciate the evidenciary support offered by other disciplines. They will learn debating/presenting skills.
Assessment Information
3000 word essay (50%), two-hour examination (50%).
