Political Analysis (U00188)

This course covers the principal theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of politics used by political scientists; and examines the potential and problems of these approaches.

This course is intended to replace the first half of the current course Methods of Politcal Analysis (40 credits), one of two complusory courses for 3rd Year Honours students in Politics.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Visiting students must have prior study in Politics. As a general guide we usually require students to have completed three Politics courses at grade B or above. Admission to honours courses is limited and there can be strong competition for places.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Political Analysis aims to:

-Develop knowledge and understanding of the principal theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of politics, and how these approaches have evolved over time
-Enable students to draw on these different approaches in analysing political events and processes;
-Equip students with the theoretical and analytical skills necessary for independent research.

The course is compulsory for students registered for the single honours (MA) degree in Politics, and optional for others. Students normally take it in their third (junior honours) year of study.

Assessment Information

Two course work assignments of 2500 and 1500 words or equivalent (weighted 50:50).
