The Dynamic Environment and the Rise of Agricultural Communities in the Near East (U00202)

The course will examine the rise of early farming communities in the Near East from the Late Glacial maximum through to the late Chalcolithic period. The material culture of early agricultural communities will be discussed in some detail, but emphasis will be placed upon the human ecology of such communities and how they dealt with the remarkably dynamic environment of the late Glacial and Early Holocene

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Theoretical Understanding: a basic knowledge of the processes that led towards the development of agriculture in the Near East, treatment of the various theoretical approaches to the problem. In addition this will provide the foundation for an understanding of classes that analyse the origins of the state in the Near East.
Practical and Professional Skills. provide the opportunity for analysing various of theoretical approaches to a subject and critically evaluating them.
Transferable Skills: the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and their interpretation
