Religion 1Bh: Religions of the Mediterranean World: From the Ancient Near East to Contemporary Islam (U00496)

An overview of four historically related religions, beginning with a foundational study of the Ancient Near East. The course then examines Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The relationships between the historical and contemporary studies of these religions are noted in the lectures.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of the course, student should be able to do the following:
1) Outline the main beliefs and practices of the traditions studied.
2) Make historical connections amongst the religions and relate these to contemporary situations.
3) Identify themes that emerge from the study of the traditions.
4) Compare the main beliefs and practices of the religions studied.

Assessment Information

1) Two hour examination answering three questions, to be administered in December (60%).
2) Essay on assigned topic of 2000-2500 words (30%).
3) Tutorial presentations, participation and attendance (10%).
