VLSI System/Circuit Design 5 (U00499)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 11  ? Acronym : EEL-5-ELVLS

This module will revise and then extend the student's knowledge of advanced methods for either digital VLSI system, or analogue VLSI CMOS design. It aims to increase skill and productivity in design specification, implementation, simulation and testing.

The aims of this module are:

1. To develop awareness of the main issues involved VLSI CMOS design
2. To advance design skills, building on previous experience
3. To carry out a substantial VLSI system design, as part of a design team.

This module should prepare and equip students to enter the field of VLSI design at a professional level. (There is scope to tailor the course, depending on the specific requirements of individual project placement).

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Either Microelectronics 3 (digital design flow) or Large Scale Integrated Circuits 4 (analogue design flow)

Subject Areas

Delivery Information

? Normal year taken : 5th year

? Delivery Period : Semester 2 (Blocks 3-4)

? Contact Teaching Time : 6 hour(s) per week for 5 weeks

? Other Required Attendance : 20 hour(s) per week for 5 weeks

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should:

1. Demonstrate ability to complete a program of supported self-study to revise and extend working knowledge of VLSI CMOS design
2. Be able to write, test and debug a component of VLSI design
3. Be able to integrate the designed subsystem with those produced by other engineers in a team.
4. Be able to contribute to developing a system specification.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be based on the following components:

1. attendance at lecture and lab sessions
2. HDL code (or equivalent) and documentation of design exercise
3. short technical presentation
4. participation in group mini-project
