Power Systems Engineering 5 (U00501)

The module will draw on the experience and research work in the area of power systems operation conducted over the past 25 years. The work conducted will be project-based, with projects changing every year to reflect the current research interests of the staff concerned, to which it should contribute.

The aims of this module are to develop understanding of the design, operation and management of large electrical power networks.

? Contact Teaching Time : 6 hour(s) per week for 5 weeks

? Other Required Attendance : 20 hour(s) per week for 5 weeks

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The specific learning objectives will depend on the particular project but will include:

1. Understanding of the theoretical network relationships in power systems.
2. Appreciation of power and frequency control in electrical power systems.
3. Understanding of the role of reactive power in the network.
4. Understanding of developments in generation technology.
5. Understanding of energy strategy and environmental issues.
6. Understanding of challenges of increasing the share of renewable generation.

Assessment Information

Assessment will be based on the following components:

1. attendance at and participation in group meetings
2. presentation
3. day-book record of work
4. moderated self-assessment
5. contribution to group report
6. oral exam
