Advanced Topics in Phonology: Optimality Theory (U00528)

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the central premises of Optimality Theory and the conceptual and empirical results that follow from its application to phonology.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

After completing this course, students should have learned:

- the basic premises and mechanisms of Optimality Theory (OT);
- how to analyze phonological data using the formal devices of OT;
- conceptual and empirical issues in OT phonology, particularly in comparison with traditional approaches to phonology.
