Linguistics 2 (U00577)

Continuation of theoretical aspects of phonology, syntax and semantics. Practical introduction to acoustic phonetics and sociolinguistics, and to quantitative and experimental methods in linguistics.

Students obtaining a mark of 60% or above in their classwork may be granted exemption from the degree examination.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Broaden and deepen knowledge and skills developed in Linguistics 1; basic knowledge of how to interpret instrumental records of speech; basic understanding of quantitative methods in sociolinguistics.

Assessment Information

Course work: Class exam on first semester material (40%); class test on instrumental phonetics (10%); hand-in assignments oninstrumental phonetics and sociolinguistics (15% each);take-home exam on group empirical methods project (20%). Course work 50%, degree exam 50%; exemptions granted.
