Architectural Design Opening A (U00772)

Through a sequence of interlinked studio investigations, MArch1 Opening A will explore strategies for reading, analysing, notating, interrogating and interpreting the contemporary urban form. Beginning with the city of Edinburgh the course will introduce and define a set of themes and concerns that will then be used to explore a further European city in Opening B

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : First degree in Architecture

? Co-requisites : Architectural Design Opening B Architectural Design Exhibition Architectural Design Thesis 1 Readings in Contemporay Architectural Theory

? Costs : Specialist Equipment fee Processes and materials involved in the presentation of their work: printing and reprographic charges, photographic costs, drawing and modelling materials; digital storage etc.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

The work will also be expected to provide evidence of the student's ability to:

- Analyse the full complexity of the contemporary urban environment.

- Represent this analysis with clarity and invention within a range of appropriate media.

- Derive a conceptual framework and structure from this analysis for the development of a coherent strategy for an architectural intervention.

- Develop this strategy as a guide and discipline within all aspects and scales of the architectural project to generate and systematically test, analyse and appraise design options, which display methodological and theoretical rigour.

Assessment Information

Drawn, modelled and documented design studio work and project panels presented as portfolio for assessment at the end of the course (100%)
