Special History in Music: The Origins and Early Development of Opera (U00939)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : ACE-3-MOpera This course aims to deepen a student's understanding of how the important art form of opera first evolved. The following areas give some idea of the scope and content of the course: music and theatre before 1600; the first operas; Venice; the emergence of French opera; music and theatre in 17th century England; the spread of Italian opera; the performance practices of early opera. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
- Students will have a better understanding of how opera first evolved.
- They will be more aware of the many factors that constitute opera and that have affected the genre and its early development. - Through the evaluation of musical, dramatic and historical evidence, and the presentation of their own arguments and conclusions, the artistic and critical faculties of the students will be enhanced. - Thus the students should be better equipped to appreciate dramatic musical works of all periods. Assessment Information
Presentation (10%) coursework essay c.3,000 words (45%), and one 2 hour degree examination (45%).
