Molecular Approaches to Investigate Bacterial Pathogenesis (U01005)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : MED-4-MI04

The topic starts with a simple introduction/reminder of basic bacterial genetics, particularly those aspects important to an understanding of virulence determinant expression in bacteria. It moves on to explain the main molecular techniques that have been applied to discover novel virulence-associated genes and the sophisticated techniques used to measure the expression of these both inside and outside the host. The topic aims to provide a perspective of the importance of appropriate gene regulation during colonisation, invasion and immune evasion by 'classical' bacterial pathogens
