Archived Version

The Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study has been formulated as a dynamic online publication in order to provide the most up to date information possible. Master versions of the Degree Regulations and Programmes of Study incorporating all changes to date are archived twice a year on 1 September and within the first three University working days prior to the start of Semester 2 in January. Please note that some of the data recorded about this course has been amended since the last master version was archived. That version should be consulted to determine the changes made.

Emerging Infections (U01025)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 10  ? Acronym : MED-4-MI22

Background: 'New' infections emerge, and others are increasing in incidence. This Elective Course provides an opportunity to examine how and why this occurs and to study selected emerging/re-emerging infections in depth.

Organisation: The Elective Course relies heavily on self-directed learning although 3 overview lectures will be given at the beginning of the course. After an initial briefing session, students will study key emerging/re-emerging infectious agents (eg, HIV, ebola, anthrax, lassa fever, hanta viruses, MRSA) under the guidance of facilitators who will meet with them regularly. Each student will study a particular organism in depth (organism biology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, pathology and clinical aspects) and present an overview (using powerpoint) to the group as well as supplying fellow-students with an A4 synoptic sheet on the organism.

Assessment: For each student, the overview presentation will form 20% and the A4 synoptic sheet 10% of the final mark (hard copies will be made available to examiners alongside general assessment of student performance during presentation and discussion that follows). A review essay/exam based on the in-course material forms 70% of the final mark. The essay/exam will be set at the end of the course (under exam conditions) and will be double-marked.
