Tapeworms, Flukes and Roundworms. (U01028)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : MED-4-MI25 This course will examine some major helminth (metazoan) parasites of man and domestic animals. Patterns of transmission of and infection by helminth parasites and the concept of 'microparasites' will be considered and the common features of helminth infections reviewed in relation to pathogenesis. Specific pathogens/infections to be discussed include the common tapeworm of dogs (Dipylidium caninum), hydatid disease (Echinococcus granulosus), cysticercosis (Taenia solium) and schistosomiasis: the pathogenesis, protective immunity and immune evasion mechanisms of each will be examined. Immune responses against hookworms and other gastrointestinal nematodes worms will also be covered. River blindness (onchocerciasis), caused by the filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus, will be considered as a spectrum disease and an example of a vector born macroparasite. Entry Requirements?
