Glucocorticoids in the Brain (U01072)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : MED-4-NSglu Glucocorticoids are stress hormones which are released in response to various stressors. They exert their effects on many systems of the body, including the brain, to enable the animal to respond appropriately to any perturbation of homeostasis. In this course we will cover the central effects of glucocorticoids, molecular and cellular mechanisms of action, the regulation of glucocorticoid secretion and the functional/behavioural consequences of altered glucocorticoid levels. We will discuss their importance in development through to ageing, as well as their functional implication in depression and stroke. The course will consist of a series of lectures coupled with student presentation and discussion of papers. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ? Pre-requisites : Permission of the Curriculum Approval Officer. Normally Molecular Cell Biology 3 and Physiology 3. ? Prohibited combinations : Stress and the Brain. ? Special Arrangements for Entry : Directors of Studies must contact the Programme Secretary or Programme Organiser for Honours Neuroscience before registering a student for this course.
