Contemporary Russian Politics (U01700)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : SPS-3-PORUS The nature of the Soviet regime is something poorly understood by many students, who do not remember the Soviet Union, but analysing its legacy is still essential to essential to understanding the politics of its successor states. This course provides a thematic and theoretical introduction to the rise and fall of Soviet power, the nature of post-communism and democracy in the former Soviet states. Entry Requirements? This course is not accepting further student enrolments. ? Pre-requisites : Visiting students must have prior study in Politics. As a general guide we usually require students to have completed three Politics courses at grade B or above. Admission to honours courses is limited and there can be strong competition for places. Objectives: By the end of the course, it is expected that students will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of key institutions and processes in Russian Politics - Exhibit a strong understanding of competing analytical and ideological approaches for understanding Russian Politics - Evaluate alternative explanations for particular political developments and events in Russia and the CIS - Develop a personal assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the Russian political system. One two-hour examination, weighted at 60%
One coursework assignment of 2,000-2,500 words or equivalent, weighted at 40%. Exam times
