Sensuous Geographies (U01721)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : GEO-3-SENSGEOG This course will provide an introduction to the key themes, concepts and theoretical debates surrounding the body, embodiment, and sensuality in current geographical thought. After providing an initial overview of the development of philosophies such as humanism, phenomenology and vitalism, the course will critically examine some of the ways in which contemporary geographers and other theorists in the social sciences have begun to negotiate embodied-sensuous geographies (for example, through performativity and non-representational theory). Alongside student seminars and group discussions the course will also draw upon a number of historical and contemporary case studies from twentieth outdoor cultures, to the installation of site-specific art. - develop the students' critical analysis skills and ability to apply theoretical and empirical knowledge to form coherent arguments in both written work and oral contributions. - develop the students' writing, discussion and oral presentation skills and ability to adhere to the rigorous conventions of academic scholarship.
