Conservation in Practice (U01811)

This module will bring together a consideration of the principles underlying the establishment of scientifically sound conservation programmes and the economic, legislative and practical measures for implementing them. Through case studies we will see how the practical and social context of conservation interacts with scientific theory in the real world.

There will be a field trip to the Cairngorms over one weekend to which the students will be expected to contribute the cost of one night's accommodation (approximately 15-20 pounds).

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Population & Community Ecology 3, and Applied Ecology & Environmental Management are required.

? Costs : circa £20 for accommodation on Cairngorm visit.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an appreciation of the need for a scientific underpinning of conservation programmes; they will understand the importance of the social and economic context of implementation and be familiar with the practical constraints in case studies; they will be able to critically assess the relative merits and demerits of practical conservation measures.

Assessment Information

There will be a short intermittent assessment (30%) and a two-hour exam answering one question from a choice of two (70%).
