Professional Practice in Outdoor Education 3 (U02238)? Credit Points : 40 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : EDU-3-PPOE The focus of this third year course is on developing knowledge and understanding of the professional roles of outdoor educators, outdoor education organisations and issues relating to working in this sector. A major element is the 40 days of structured learning on professional placement with outdoor education organisations. In this context students will have the opportunity to further develop practical and leadership skills in outdoor education and to gain direct experience of the operations of an outdoor education organisation from a professional perspective. Classes will address theory relating to reviewing, evaluating the experiences, professionalism and professional issues in outdoor and environmental education. Assessment tasks will further develop critical reflection skills, knowledge of the roles, programmes and processes of the agencies and the role of the outdoor educator in these contexts. On completing this ocurse students will be able to:
1. understand the principles of professional practice in outdoor Education and the value laden nature of outdoor education. 2. articulate key issues relating to professional practice in outdoor education and the outdoor sector in the UK. 3. demonstrate understanding and critical evaluation of the role of the agency within the outdoor education field. 4. demonstrate competence and creativity in the planning, performance and teaching of outdoor education skills as required by the agency and at an appropriate level for skills held. 5. articulate awareness and judgement of their own strengths and weaknesses in regard to teaching outdoors. 6. articulate an understanding of programme objectives and processes and apply these to practice. 7. demonstrate a practical and theoretical awareness of environmental issues and appropriate practice in this context. 8. critically examine the use of outdoor education in personal and social development. 9. show an applied understanding of approaches to evaluation of outdoor education.
