Social Judgement and Decision Making (VS1) (U02425)

Aims and objectives: This option examines judgment and decision making as it relates to particularly social issues. It begins with the Lecturer providing an overview of the basic issues in judgment and decision making. The option then makes use of a seminar format. In particular, students - working in teams - will be responsible for leading a discussion about some of the most interesting and often controversial issues in social judgment and decision making, including biased perception, evolutionary vs. socio-cultural pressures, selection of criteria for measuring rationality, definitions of accuracy, etc.

? Pre-requisites : Normally Psychology Methodology 1 (U00651) or equivalent.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end, the students should possess an
understanding of the major theoretical issues in the field of judgment and decision making, knowledge of how these issues can be applied to the study of social psychology, and an improved ability to critically assess empirical evidence.

Assessment Information

One 2,000 word coursework essay to be submitted to the course secretary one week after the end of the course.
