Sediments, Time and People (U02514)

? Credit Points : 20  ? SCQF Level : 8  ? Acronym : GEO-1-U02514

1. Sediment moves on the surface as a function of gravity and solar energy
2. The controlling topography of this movement is generated by plate tectonics.
3. In the past, different plate tectonic and climate states have produced different patterns of sediments on the Earth
4. Coal, oil, gas, aggregates, fertile areas for habitation, agrarian and industrial development are intimately linked to present and past patterns of sediment sources and sinks.

This course will explore the underlying causes of sediment generation, transport and deposition. It will investigate the relationship between modern sedimentary processes and human society. It will use the case study of the UK area to investigate past

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

1. An understanding of the processes that cause material to move on the Earth's surface.
2. An understanding of the principles of plate tectonics, geological time and geographical scale.
3. To be able to explain the major methods by which sediments are transported and the characteristics of such sediments.
4. To remember and understand an outline of the geological history of the British Isles
5. To be able to interpret and to construct simple geological maps
6. To remember the main groups of economic sedimentary deposits, their mode of formation, extraction and uses.
7. To be able to discuss the human impact of sediment movement and economic sediments.
