Malaria: the microbe, the disease and the search for a solution (U02673)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : MED-4-MI31 This course will assume no previous exposure to tropical medicine or malaria pathogenesis. It will start with an overview of the history of malaria and the discovery of the causative parasite and its vector. The biology of Plasmodium falciparum and its molecular genetics will be reviewed before turning to an analysis of nature of malaria as a human disease problem. Current research on all aspects of malaria control and the possibilities for a lasting resolution of the struggle against this parasitic disease in the 'post-genomic' era will be discussed and debated. The format of the special topic will be one of introductory lectures followed by viewing of a series of films portraying different aspects of the malaria problem, made over the last quarter century. This will be followed by group discussion and analysis of recent and relevant publications. Entry Requirements? This course is not available to visting students. ?
