Victorian Women Writing (U02733)? Credit Points : 20 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : LLC-4-EL0078 Course considers themes of gender, class and empire (including Scotland and England in relation to each other) as well as looking at questions of social position, the position of women in Victorian society; these will be considered, using fiction and non-fiction texts, in Victorian women's writing. It will look at the intersections between fiction and non-fiction writing, using novels, autobiographies, letters and diaries (both published and unpublished), polemical writing and journalism. Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
The course will enable students to discuss different genres of prose writing by women in the Victorian age; it will give them a grounding in the social history of the time; it will allow them to explore issues of gender in a historical period but also in relation to ideas of empire and social class. They will also become familiar with areas of uses of rhetoric (including style and use of metaphor) in non-fiction (whether published or unpublished).
Assessment Information
1 essay of c. 2,500 words (25%); 1 examination paper of 2 hours (75%).
