Studying Macromolecules in Health and Disease (U02788)? Credit Points : 10 ? SCQF Level : 10 ? Acronym : BIO-4-BImacmoll All macroscopic and cellular events have a cause on the molecular level. It is the properties of proteins and membranes, which determine their behaviour and, most frequently, their interactions with other proteins, cellular components and ligands. Therefore, a central aspect in structural biology as well as drug development is the characterisation and understanding of macromolecular properties and interactions. On the one hand, this leads to enhanced knowledge about molecular level mechanisms in health and disease, and on the other hand, certain properties of proteins can be used to monitor and assess their behaviour, e.g. in binding studies of pharmaceutical drugs to their target enzymes. We will look at some methods and techniques to probe macromolecular properties, especially biophysical methods and their applications to common problems. In practical sessions, we will use relevant computer software applications and design and perform an experiment on annexin loop motion.
