Morbid Anatomy and Histopathology (U02885)

This course is essentially a practical one in which students are exposed to the practical manifestations of disease processes as taught in Infection and Immunity Course and the Integrated Pathology/Clinical modules in Third Year. 1 To understand and learn the occurrence, development and progression of pathological lesions in body systems and individual organs, and to relate their morphology at gross and microscopic level to clinically recognisable functional defects and disease states. 2 To study and interpret morbid anatomy and macroscopic lesions in such a way as to make a meaningful diagnostic assessment in relation to 'in vivo' clinical observations.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be assessed according to their ability to :
1 Define and use specialist terminology of general and systematic pathology disciplines.
2 Recognise, describe and interpret the morphology of lesions in organs at macroscopic and histological levels, using autopsy and fresh or fixed gross specimens, slide transparencies, photographs and histological preparations.
3 Correlate pathological changes and lesions with clinical signs and interpret the significance and sequelae of pathological lesions in clinical diseases, with reference to diagnosis and prognosis.

Assessment Information

The Degree Examination will be held at the end of the year and will take place in a lecture theatre and consist of a series of powerpoint slides with associated questions. The slides will include images of both gross and histological/cytological material. The duration will be approximately 1 hour 15 minutes and there are 15 questions, all to be attempted.
