Utopia II: Suffrage to Cyberpunk (U02922)

This course will examine the idea of utopia within the context of ten key twentieth century texts, beginning with Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland (1915) and concluding with Ridley Scott's Blade Runner (1982). Themes to be discussed include technology and ideology, power, gender and utopia, subjectivity and the (post) modern subject, and geographical spaces.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course will be able to examine the idea of utopia within the context of key twentieth century texts. They will also be able to be discuss the technology and ideology, power, gender and utopia, subjectivity and the (post) modern subject, and geographical spaces.

Assessment Information

1 course essay of 2,500 words (25%); 1 take-away exam essay of 3,000 words (75%)
