Computer Communications (U01899)

? Credit Points : 10  ? SCQF Level : 9  ? Acronym : INF-3-COM

Historically, computing and telecommunications were viewed as distinct technical entities. Now, with the advent of cheap computers and sophisticated computer networks, the two have merged. The course examines the fundamental techniques used to implement the sharing of information between computers, and applies them to all levels of communication, from the transmission of bits along physical connections to the distribution of computations over many processors.

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Computer Science 2A (INF-2-CS2A) and Computer Science 2B (INF-2-CS2B).

? Co-requisites : Programming expertise.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students should:
-have acquired an understanding of the organisation and operation of computer communications channels
-be able to demonstrate familiarity with the fundamental principles of computer communication and be able to apply these principles in practice.
-have gained a working knowledge of basic communications protocols and be able to demonstrate their use in controlling the movement of data in reliable networks
-be familiar with the basic concepts and practical implementation of compression, error detection/correction, encryption, flow-control, network topologies, and network technologies
-have experience of implementating low-level reliable communications channels and be able to apply that experience in similar practical situations.
-be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of layered protocol stacks such as OSI, and have an awareness of the role of the major standards organisations in the development of open standards.
