See below for progammes Professional Requirements and PlacementsProfessional RegistrationStudents awarded the Degree with Teaching Qualification (TQ) are eligible to apply for professional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTC). This does not apply to BEd TESOL. Entrants to Community Education initial training programmes also require to undergo a Disclosure Scotland: Criminal Records check (see below). Students for admission to the Register of Teachers must undergo and pass a medical examination before, or as soon as possible after, entry to the programme of study. This examination is a requirement of the GTC and students will only be admitted to, or be permitted to continue on, a programme if they are declared ‘fit to teach’. Students must also be declared ‘fit to teach’ at the end of their programme of study if they are to be admitted to the Register of Teachers. These examinations are conducted under the terms of The Teachers (Education, Training and Recommendation for Registration) (Scotland) Regulations 1993. Disclosure Scotland: Criminal Records CheckStudents for admission to the Register of Teachers are also subject to a criminal convictions check, carried out by Disclosure Scotland. Admission to the profession of registered teacher in Scotland is excepted from provisions of Section 4 (2) of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 by virtue of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) (Amendments) Order 1986. Students for admission to a programme of study leading to a TQ are therefore not entitled to withhold information about a previous conviction on the grounds that it is, for other purposes, spent under the Act. Subject to the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, failure to disclose a relevant conviction may result in the withdrawal of an offer of admission or termination of a programme of studies. Placement grades for teacher education coursesFor each placement (but not in PGCE programmes or BEd TESOL) a grade will be awarded by both the school and the University; discrepancies between these of more than one grade will be investigated by both the University and the school; the Board of Examiners will be made aware of the results of such an investigation. The school and University grades will have equal weighting in the calculation of Honours degree class. Click on a programme name to view that programme Undergraduate Programmes
