An examination of problems and ambiguities associated with the category "Hindu" in relation to various kinds of diversity and dissent in Indian religious traditions and modern attempts to reform and homogenise around an entity called "Hinduism".

Entry Requirements

? Pre-requisites : Pass in Religion 1b and Religion 2b, or permission of Course Organiser (a pass in Indian Civilisation 1 or Indian Religion and Philosophy 2 is advantageous).

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

- An understanding of various kinds of diversity and dissent within South Asian, especially 'Hindu' traditions, and the differing ways these are articulated.
- A familiarity with the complexities associated with identity in South Asia.
- An ability to critically appraise the use of terms such as 'Hinduism' and 'Hindutva' in academic and popular understanding.
- A familiarity with and ability to critically assess various kinds of source material as well as different perspectives on these.
- An ability to analyse 'Western' influences on modern understandings of 'Hinduism'.

Assessment Information

10% on seminar presentations and participation
90% on essays
