Music, Mind and Body B: Psychology and Sociology (P01190)

Via a series of lectures and seminars, the course will introduce topics regarding the psychology and sociology of music, including perception and cognition, communication, theory of groups, trust and self-esteem, and music in the community.

The topics included in this description represent themes to be covered in the course. There may be some flexibility on the specific topics covered according to the availability of staff and visiting speakers in particular weeks.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will gain an understanding of the currently emerging bio-psycho-social paradigm for human music-making, with specific reference to psychological and sociological theories, and will develop the intellectual facility to apply this knowledge to specific practice.

Assessment Information

Seminar presentation (20%) and 3,000 word essay (80%).
