Portfolio Management and Investment Analysis (P00235)
The course teaches theoretical and practical aspects of investment analysis and investment portfolio management. Asset pricing models, such as APT and CAPM, and portfolio theory, will be discussed. The course will cover global investing, multiple asset-class investing and asset allocation techniques such as optimisation and scenario analysis. Analytical and valuation approaches for various asset classes will be taught. Risk management tools such as BARRA and Style Research; techniques such as Value at Risk; and statistics such as tracking error will be introduced. Investment philosophies, management processes, and factors behind the success or failure of different investment firms will be analysed.

Summary of Intended Learning Outcomes
Students should develop an understanding of theoretical asset pricing models and portfolio theory. Students should be comfortable practising analytical and valuation techniques for equities, nominal and index-linked bonds, real estate and private equity. Students should learn the importance of asset allocation and risk management in the portfolio management process, and will gain knowledge of risk management tools and techniques. Students should also learn the importance of a disciplined investment process to successful portfolio management, and should be able to design or develop a rigorous process for an investment management firm.
Students will be assessed by an assignment during the course (30% of total assessed score) and by examination at the end of the course (70% of total assessed score).
