Proof of Concept in Translational Medicine (P02819)

This course will explore the organisation, structuring and implementation of Translational Medicine within academia and industry. Case studies will be used to examine how academic and commercial sectors are reorganising to accommodate translational research strategies to drive new concepts and to reduce the attrition rates of new compounds. Particular use will be made of the Scottish based Translational Medicine Research Collaboration which will be used as an example of a developing public-private partnership in Translational Medicine. There will be exploration of mechanisms to promote interdisciplinary and translational research in academia and industry as a means of driving innovation. Examples will be given of the role of new technologies for delivering biomarkers in drug discovery and development. The planning for the development and delivery of new technologies in Translational Research will be explored.

? Pre-requisites : None other than Programme entry requirements

? Co-requisites : All students registered for Diploma/MSc in Translational Medicine MUST do this core course.

? Special Arrangements for Entry : All courses will be delivered by distance learning, using WebCT as the delivery platform. Registered students are provided with a user name and password that allows them to access a protected course web site. The website provides a variety of educational material and supports a range of approaches by the students to the material provided. Online delivery will be supported through the provision of core didactic material, multimedia tutorials and discussions with peers and tutors. The website also houses a number of interactive tutorials that allow students to work with information in a self-paced manner to test their understanding of important concepts and principles. There will also be opportunities for group based project work.

Study guides with lecture notes are available, either to be read on screen or printed by the students for private use. Selected readings from relevant journals and textbooks are also provided.

- Apppreciation of the Infastructural and organisational changes to accommodate Translational Medicien in academia and industry.
- Approaches for the determination of biomarkers and incorporation of new technologies
- Interdisciplinary mechanisms for Translational Medicine
- Use of case studies to highlight core concepts

Assessment Information

The Course is assessed by participation in online discussion, multiple choice questioning, group project work and individual written assignments.
